My Mentor, Our Pioneer
As a podiatrist, it’s rare to meet someone who not only transforms your understanding of surgery but also reshapes the course of your entire career. Dr. Stephen Isham was that person for me.  His recent passing is an immeasurable loss—not just to those who knew him, but to the entire field of podiatric medicine.
A Teacher Like No Other
I had the privilege of learning Minimally Invasive Surgery directly from Dr. Isham by attending lectures, participating in surgical workshops and our dinner conversations. I can say without hesitation that he was one of the most brilliant minds I’ve encountered. His humble generosity and dedication to advance Minimally Invasive Surgery (MIS) served to improve the lives of patients and colleagues.
A Pioneer in Minimally Invasive Surgery
Dr. Isham was a true pioneer in Minimally Invasive Surgery and far ahead of his time. He was perfecting techniques that prioritized patient comfort, quicker recovery, and outstanding outcomes long before MIS became a standard.  His ability to blend innovation (using smaller incisions resulting in less trauma and quicker recoveries) with precision was remarkable. Surgeons worldwide have adopted his methods to the benefit of patients everywhere who today have better, safer outcomes.
A Legacy of Mentorship
Perhaps the most impressive thing about Dr. Isham was his commitment to mentoring and teaching. He not only was a great surgeon, but he lived to help others become great surgeons. He poured his time, energy, and passion into educating others. Through hands-on workshops, lectures, and one-on-one mentoring, he helped others develop and perfect new skills. He was humble in his approach, patient when we struggled, encouraging when we doubted, and deeply satisfied in the success of those he taught. I carry his lessons into every operating room I enter, and I know many others who do the same.
Personal Thanks
Losing Dr. Isham feels deeply personal. Not just because he was a mentor and a friend, but because he represented the best of what our profession can be. His legacy lives on through every MIS procedure we perform borrowing from the techniques he developed, and in every patient who benefits from the gentler approaches he championed.Thank you, Dr. Isham—for your vision, your generosity, and your belief in all of us. You work changed the course of medicine, and your life improved my life. My goal is to share your work to benefit patients today and tomorrow. You will never be forgotten.
